Fairly certain I’ve stolen that headline, implied question mark and all (Bruce Chatwin? Pico Iyer? At a minimum…). It’s a question I’ve often asked myself along the way, whether on assignment, or in an office tower on an especially beautiful day. It’s a question I’ve gotta hope my posts here will answer for, as my career in journalism has followed the rough opposite of a masterplan, and I don’t often know. What am I doing here? If I’m honest, I meant to start posting my bylined work on a Gopher site, in 1993. Clearly, like the engineers and programmers I once covered at Wired, I know how to move fast and break things—just not always in that order.
