What Really Took Deven Black’s Life

Troubled middle-aged white man named Black knifed by a troubled young black man named White in a Harlem homeless shelter: it read in the Times and Daily News like a subplot cut from Bonfire of the Vanities. Bob Love, the former editor of Rolling Stone, now editor of AARP Magazine, realized it something else, too: a cautionary tale about a rare, often missed form of dementia that diminishes judgment, inhibition, empathy. Given recent news, I wonder if it’s really that rare.
